It has been such a blessing to continue our tradition of sharing the story of Jesus' birth with the boys through our Advent calendar. The boys absolutely love it! They continue to debate about whose turn it really is to pull the baby Jesus out on December 24th. (It is Caleb's turn this year, in case you are keeping score.). The boys take turns pulling out a piece of the nativity each day, along with a scripture verse from the birth stories of Jesus in Luke and Matthew. We then add our newest scripture to the story and reread it each day. The boys take turns reading the new verse that is added. It is extra exciting this year, because for the first time, Seth is able to read the scriptures (with a little help), too. On Christmas Eve, each verse of the story will have been revealed, pieced together and the nativity complete.
This year, I also added the passage from Isaiah 9:6-9 fortelling of the coming Messiah:
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the greatness of his government and peace
there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the LORD Almighty
will accomplish this.
Our prayer is that it will keep the focus on what this time of year is truly about...anticipating the coming of our Lord and Savior. May the Word of God be planted, so it will abide in their (and ours) little hearts always.
