Accidental 5K

This morning was the Jingle Bell Run!

It is a Christmas themed 5K race that helps support the Arthritis Foundation.  There is also a Family Fun Mile Run/Walk and Santa Claus chase, along with some other fun activities.  Everyone comes dressed in Christmas spirit, too!  We definitely saw some pretty festive attire and sights!

Caleb's running club at school has been training for it this fall, and the rest of us Workmans were happy to come out and run the Family Fun run mile course in downtown Franklin with Caleb and his buddies.

So, off we went with our jingle bells and Santa hats, bundled up for the run. Thankfully, although it was a bit chilly this morning, once we got downtown with all of the people and running energy, we warmed up quite a bit.

We decided ahead of time that Eric and Caleb would stick together, while Seth and I would hang back at our own pace and then we would all meet up afterward at the big Christmas tree.  The 5K course and 1 mile course started out  the same, with a turn a half mile in, sending the runners/walkers in opposite directions to complete their respective course.

Once we were off, Eric and Caleb sped ahead of us.  But Seth and I gave it a pretty good go. In all of the excitement, Seth immediately let go of my hand, and took off into a fast sprint.  He kept up a pretty good pace.  We ran, we walked, and had really good time together.  Seth was quite a trooper!  He got to pet a sweet doggy on the run, experienced his first side stitch, and crossed the finish line at super speed.

As we were approaching that finish line, we were looking for a cheering Dada and Biz.   But we couldn't see them anywhere.  Some of the other families from our school were waiting and asking if we had seen the rest of our group.  No, were they not here?  How did we beat everyone else? We were fully expecting to be greeted by the group, not the other way around.

No, the majority of the running club, including Caleb and Eric, were nowhere to be found.  It became instantly apparent, that at the turn, our group had gone the wrong way.  It wasn't clearly marked, so it was easy to see how the mistake was made. When Seth and I reached that point, in my own confusion, I asked which way to go.  I guess Caleb and Eric did not.   They were all on the course to do the 5K!

Seth and I unexpectedly crossed the finish line first.  And Caleb and Eric unexpectedly were running a 5K.

So, we had swapped positions, and now Seth and I were anxiously awaiting their arrival to the finish line.  About twenty minutes after we completed our run/walk, Caleb and Eric came into sight, and we got to cheer them on as they crossed the finish line.  And Caleb got to complete his very first 5K...accidentally!

Seth jumped out to finish the run (again) with Dada and Biz.  He was quite proud of himself for finishing twice!

What a great start to the day!
